Anyone driving into Swakopmund for the first time could be forgiven for thinking that they are wasting their time and that the gravel plains and dunes could not possibly harbour much variety of life. Or what life there is must be elusive to the point of being mythical. (It is heading that way judging by the motorised destruction taking place all around in the dunes, beach and plains. The scars are there for all to see but very few seem to care.) Life however abounds in this area as it does along the entire coast. 220 Bird species have been recorded in this area, not too mention the smaller reptiles, insects and mammals that also inhabit this area.

I have decided to spend some time documenting the life in and around the town, while it still remotely resembles the environment I grew up in. Before it all disappears. Hope you enjoy the images take care and cherish what we still have.

GREAT (EASTERN) WHITE PELICAN, Pelecanus onocrotalus
HEAVEY-SIDED DOLPHIN.

Finally one that works-after many, many, many shots of nothing but water.

WHITE-FRONTED PLOVER, Charadrius marginatus

Chasing after its dinner along the tide-line.

This is also the sight that greeted the turnstones that were feeding in the plovers vicinity. There was no hesitation on the plovers behalf in seeing off the larger and more numerous turnstones.

LITTLE EGRET, Egretta garzetta
BLACK WINGED STILT, Himantopus himantopus

BAR-TAILED GODWIT, Limosa lapponica

Searching for worms on the tide line.

RUDDY TURNSTONE, Arenaria interpres
GREATER AND LESSER FLAMINGOS

Phoenicopterus ruber and minor

WHITE-FRONTED PLOVER, Charadrius marginatus

With one of two chicks I observed that morning.

What a parent this plover is!! She managed to get her two chicks this far in a world that unfortunately does not look as pristine as the mound they are sitting on. The plains all around this pair is crisscrossed with tyre tracks, although there are several roads, one of which I was parked on when I took this shot. Why can't people just stick to the roads!!!
