What can I say, I took a room!!! Air conditioning and all the modern comforts that go along with it. Yes I gave up camping for four nights while visiting the Etosha National Park.
The park lies in the northern regions of the country and covers an area of 22 912 square kilometers. I would not let that worry me too much though, as vast areas of the park are off limits to visitors. Access is only permitted in the eastern part of the park and only on the designated roads. A good thing in general I would say. I did however manage to do a lot of driving. This is the only way that anyone can visit the park. Game viewing at this time of year is still good, if you are not expecting to see huge amounts of the "usual attractions". Lions and elephants were seen up close and all the familiar faces were around, just not in huge concentrations at the permanent waterholes. Zebra, springbok and impala were everywhere, not forgetting that at least one jackal will always be around for entertainment. You just have too look a bit harder to find some of the parks residents. In summer the park definitely takes on a different face. There were pans of standing water, reeds and tall grass. Everything was green and fresh. Each part of the year is distinctly different yet unmistakably Etosha. If you can, visit the park in both winter and summer. Etosha will not disappoint. |
