The last morning of 2006 found me sitting on a beach, soaked and leaning into buffeting winds blowing off the sea. I was taking a break, a break away from my workstation and back out doors. I have always wanted to capture the coastline in winter, but unfortunately winter this year round seems to have an identity crisis. It has not been very cold, but it has been wet, and very, very windy!
I decided to photograph the rough sea and the wall of towering white cliffs in black and white. The mono treatment helps emphasize the timeless and defiant character of the sea, as it comes up against the land. The rough weather did not only set the scene for some moody image, but also insured that the beach was deserted for the most part of the morning. A luxury not often encountered in this crowded part of the world.

I have spent hours along this cliff edge watching peregrine falcons patrolling the cliff face in search of prey. Shortly after taking this shot, a camera bag came tumbling past me towards the cliffs’ edge, the unlucky owner scrambling after it. The wind had lifted the bag (it contained a number of photographic items, including a heavy lens) and carried it away!
The bag was saved in the nick of time. This did however encourage me to take a few steps back from the edge, as a few days earlier a photographer had been blown off the cliff.
I will be visiting the spot again though as I am still hoping to secure a shot of a peregrine falcon over the sea. Maybe this will be the year I get my image
