All About Feathers

February has had a good start so far, as it has snowed again….JUST NOT WHERE I AM!!!!  Oh well I might just get a snow machine!  I have however been quite busy photographing a whole host of birds.  This month will probably be filled with a series of bird images ranging from the local residents in the park to a host of wild birds.

The birds pose quite a challenge in photographic terms.  Not only do they spend their time in largely inaccessible areas, in the sky, tree tops, thorny under growth and as tiny, little dots out on a lake.  (Visible only to birders with monster scopes) They are also extremely agile and very wary subjects.  As an example when using my 500mm lens along with a 1.4 x converter, I still need to get within 5 meters of small birds the size of a sparrow to get a decent image size.  Closer still, for frame filling images.

But there are ways of getting these images without unduly stressing the subject.   I use them all.  Hides, food, water and just plain old lying in the mud for hours waiting. The mud option is not the most comfortable one, but being on the same level as your subject just brings an image to life.

All the following images were taken using my Canon EOS 5 D, 500 mm IS lens and a 1.4 x Converter. All of this mounted on a Gitzo tripod. Rock steady.

This chaffinch actually came up to me after I had been lying quitely on the ground for about an hour. I was obviously no threat.
