Serpent

Please note I have not used the word snake in the title.  The unfortunate reaction from a lot of people is to run in the opposite direction or to resort to a more permanent solution.  Permanent for the snake not the person!  Me, I have come to cherish any opportunity to photograph or just watch these fascinating reptiles.

The following images are of a tiger snake found in Southern Africa (Nothing to do with the Australian versions, constantly shown on nature programs).  These little beauties are nocturnal and like to spend their time under rocks and anything that provides cover.  Hence the huge eyes!

Being rather small, slender snakes (maximum size for males is about 880 mm), the hardest thing photographically was obtaining a decent image size.  Out came the macro lens and my crude home made flash bracket.  For the headshots, I added a small amount of extension, just to get in a bit tighter.

Being temperamental snakes, I restricted myself to taking a few photos at a time and let them just go about their business.  Testing the air and my lens thoroughly.  There are a few more snake images that will make their way into these pages, soon.  Enjoy.
