"A roaring lion kills no game.." - African proverb

The road back to Swakopmund was a long one! And I mean long! Along the +/- 850 km long, dusty hot gravel road there is only one Town not necessitating a detour (Aus, 125 km from Luderitz), from there on there are petrol points, Farms big blue skies and lots and lots of dust. It’s the dust I remember most vividly when I think back to my school holidays and the trips to the farm in the South. Now as then everything in the back of my green monster (4x4) was covered in a layer of fine powdery dust. It definitely stirred up memories…though I don’t think my camera gear enjoyed this much. My lenses definitely suffer from chronic crunch syndrome!!! The image above was taken on the road back from the farm where I would spend my school holidays. It always signalled the end of freedom and carefree days and a return to the restraints of town and school. Even though those school days are long behind me now, the return journey this time round awoke those very same feelings of something lost and left behind…Below is the same location just looking South, though when travelling it is never a good idea to linger and look back! |

Road from the past...

Though essentially viewed as a desert and by many to be a desolate stretch of road leading from nowhere special to what must be somewhere better, is somewhat misguided. As far back as I can remember, the road side entertainment always consisted of Ostriches running along side the car (though I saw a lot more of them in the past), Gemsbok grazing on the barren plains and herds of Zebra warily watching us as we drove along, dust dancing in our wake. The above image is another realisation of a memory deeply etched in my mind.

With the Southern Road behind us we headed back into the Namib Proper...and just that little bit closer to home. Back on familiar ground!

I purposefully faded the colour on this image and introduced a taboo in the digital age...Noise/grain! To many this is just a dusty Third World Road somewhere, but there is no other road I'd rather be on! Take care and we'll return to the norm in the next Bulletin... |
